The Life Raft Principle: Sometimes We Weren't Meant to Stay Afloat Alone

Kim Donahue shares the life raft principle — a reminder that strength isn't about carrying everything alone, but about knowing when to reach for the people placed in your life to help.

A wooden life raft floating on a calm ocean at golden hour, symbolizing hope and reaching out for help

There is something I've learned over the years that I wish I had understood much earlier in life:

Strength is not the ability to carry everything by yourself.

Strength is knowing when to reach for the people who have been placed in your life to help carry the weight.

I call this the "life raft principle."

Imagine yourself in the middle of the ocean.

The waves are high. The wind is blowing. You're exhausted from trying to keep your head above water. You've convinced yourself that if you just work a little harder, swim a little farther, or push a little longer, you'll eventually make it to shore.

Then, suddenly, someone tosses you a life raft.

What do you do?

Most of us would immediately grab it.

Yet, somehow, in real life, we do the opposite.

We struggle.

We isolate ourselves.

We tell everyone we're fine.

We smile when we're hurting.

We insist that we don't need anyone.

And then we wonder why we're exhausted.

I know because I've done it myself.

For years, I believed that being strong meant handling everything on my own. As a Realtor, business owner, caregiver, friend, daughter, writer, and woman of faith, I've often found myself trying to be everything to everyone.

There are listings to manage, clients to serve, phone calls to answer, contracts to negotiate, blog posts to write, dogs to care for, a home to maintain, and people I love who depend on me.

Some days, I feel unstoppable.

Other days, if I'm being completely honest, I feel as though I'm swimming against the current.

I've discovered something beautiful during those moments.

God often sends us life rafts in the form of people.

Sometimes, they're lifelong friends who show up without being asked.

Sometimes, they're complete strangers who arrive at exactly the right moment.

Sometimes, they're family members who remind us that we're loved.

Sometimes, they're clients who become friends.

Sometimes, they're the people who simply sit quietly beside us and remind us that we don't have to carry everything alone.

I've learned that pride can sometimes disguise itself as independence.

We tell ourselves:

"I don't want to be a burden."

"They have enough going on."

"I can handle it."

"I'll figure it out."

But what if accepting help isn't weakness?

What if accepting help is wisdom?

I think back to some of the hardest seasons of my life.

There were moments of heartbreak.

Moments of disappointment.

Moments when I questioned whether I was strong enough to continue.

Moments when I felt as though everyone around me believed I had everything together while, deep down, I was simply trying to stay afloat.

And every single time, someone showed up.

A friend.

A family member.

A prayer.

An unexpected opportunity.

A kind word.

A phone call.

A simple text message.

Every one of them became a life raft.

The truth is that we were never designed to navigate life entirely on our own.

Think about the people you love.

If one of them were struggling, would you want them to ask for help?

Of course you would.

Then why are we so reluctant to do the same?

What Is the Life Raft Principle?

The life raft principle teaches us two very important lessons.

First, we must be willing to accept help when it is offered.

Second, we should become life rafts for other people whenever we can.

That doesn't mean solving everyone's problems.

It doesn't mean rescuing people who refuse to help themselves.

It simply means showing up.

Sending the text.

Making the call.

Sitting down for coffee.

Listening without judgment.

Offering encouragement.

Praying for someone who needs hope.

Sharing your knowledge.

Opening a door.

Giving someone the strength to hold on just a little longer.

How Can Real Estate Agents Apply the Life Raft Principle?

I've often said that real estate has never been just about houses for me.

It's about people.

It's about relationships.

It's about understanding that behind every transaction is a story.

A young couple buying their first home.

A widow preparing to move after decades of memories.

A family relocating hundreds of miles away.

Parents helping their children build a future.

Someone beginning again.

Every one of them is searching for solid ground.

Many of them simply need someone to throw them a life raft.

The older I get, the more I realize that success isn't measured by the money we earn, the awards we receive, or the number of transactions we close.

Success is measured by the lives we touch along the way.

So, today, I want to ask you a simple question.

Who has been a life raft in your life?

Have you thanked them?

And whose life could be changed if you chose to become one for them?

Because sometimes, the strongest thing we can do is reach out our hand.

And sometimes, the most courageous thing we can do is take the hand that has already been extended to us.

After all, we were never meant to stay afloat alone.
